A Review of the VIVOBAREFOOT Ra

I needed a new pair of shoes for more formal situations, like when applying for a job. The VIVOBAREFOOT Ra is a shoe that is very well suited for this. It is made out of leather and comes in black, dark brown, and reddish brown. It is also available in an olive colored suede in the USA and a beige colored suede in Europe. The Ra comes in mens, kids and, juniors sizes.

VIVOBAREFOOT Ra - On the Feet

In addition to its minimalist sole, the leather uppers of the Ra are also quite simple - consisting primarily of four pieces of leather and three pairs of eyelets for the laces. In black, they are really all black. No coloured details. This makes them perfect for office use.

My feet are wide at the front but narrow at the heel, so I was afraid that the Ra would be too wide at the heel for me. The Ra is very wide at the front, it is one of the widest shoes I own. The heel cup fits my feet very snugly - in fact initially it was too snug on one foot. The leather was cutting into my Achilles tendon. Luckily I was able to find a shoemaker who was able to fix the problem.

The sole is the thinnest that VIVOBAREFOOT offers. This is my first pair of VIVOBAREFOOT shoes with this type of sole, I have been amazed by the ground feel. When walking from one room to another in the office I am able to easily discern the difference in floor surfaces without looking at them.

The ground feel would even be better without the insoles but I prefer to leave them in. The leather around the ankles is rather close fitting; if I remove the insoles it begins to cut into my ankles.

The leather is very soft. Together with the great fit and the barefoot feel, the shoes are very comfortable. This is exactly what you need for a shoe that you wear all day long.

VIVOBAREFOOT Ra

The shoes weigh 21 oz (594g) in a size 45 (US 11.5) for the pair; very lightweight. You may find yourself jumping around the office the first time you wear them.

New for spring 2012 is that the Ra is also available in canvas, in the colours navy and red. This shoe is 100% vegan. VIVOBAREFOOT also has a boot version of the Ra called the Gobi (The Gobi may not be available in the US).

There are also a few other alternatives to the Ra, like the Merrel Tough Glove and Edge Glove, the VIVOBAREFOOT Legacy and Dharma, the Russell Moccasin minimalist oxfords, and custom options from Flexible Footwear. Another interesting dress shoe that has yet to hit the market is the Primal Professional.

The retail price of the Ra is $130 USD / EUR 115 / GBP 85.

About the Author

I am a runner, kayaker and hiker. About three or four years ago by accident I found some information on the internet about barefooting and running on minimal shoes. I immediately realized that this would fit me.

I already had decided that heavyweight hiking boots were not the right choice for footwear for me. Once I put an arch support in my shoes but I never trusted it to be the right solution for my flat feet. In 2007 a hiking holiday ended after five days in a hospital because a small crack in the road made me fall. I was wearing Scarpa Vento’s. Low shoes with the soles of a heavyweight hiking boot. No proprioception at all but also no ankle support to compensate the instability caused by the thick soles.

Now I am experimenting with minimal shoes for (ultralight) hiking, running and daily wear. And of course I love barefooting, especially in nature.

I recently got a Ra also, and

I recently got a Ra also, and I'm thinking of sending it back - the leather is VERY stiff and stabs the back of my foot.

I suspect they treated the leather with a plasticizer. It's harder than the leather on my regular dress shoes.

The sole is also stiff compared to a VFF trek.

Did you find the leather on your Ra loosened up with use? What about the sole?

Shoe Mod?

I've been eyeing the Ra as a casual shoe myself. I'm curious, what did the shoemaker do to the shoe, and how much did it cost?

Thanks,

Raul

The shoemaker can widen the edges of the heelcup so it doesn't cut into your Achilles tendon. The shoemaker can't make the heelcup more flexible I think.
He actually did it for free so I gave him a tip.
I don't think the heelcup is treated with a plasticizer. It's just the narrow shape that makes it more stiff.

Good, but overpriced

I got my Ra's a few weeks ago. In a nutshell, I absolutely love the shoe, but I think they are radically overpriced. Until I got these I wore a pair of leather driving mocs that I got from Target for something like $35. I ripped out the insole, and they were almost flat, very flexible, and almost roomy enough in the forefoot. I'm sure that the sweatshop that turns out the Target shoes runs at a higher volume than the sweatshop that produces the Ra, and I'm sure that Vivobarefoot is using materials that cost a few dollars more. But, who knows - it could be the same Foxconn like sweatshop that produces both. Either way, there is no quality difference that I can tell between these shoes - I don't expect the Ra's to last three times as long. I sincerely hope that the minimalist movement picks up enough momentum that we can start getting good, cheap shoes. Minimalist footwear should cost less, not more.

Agree with Adam: good but overpriced

I've had my Ra's for about 3 months now. I bought a pair, along with pair of Merrell Tough Gloves, for a bunch of business travel. they are both fine minimal shoes for business casual situations. I think the Ra looks sharper than the Tough Gloves but i do like the fit of the Tough Gloves a little better. but they both fit well, snug in the heel and wide at the toes. better ground feel with the Ra, for sure.

i ripped out the insoles on mine because they were riding up the back of my heel. I contacted the vendor and that seems to be a known issue for some folks. they recommend either taking out the insoles or using a bit of 2 sided tape.

I really, really needed a couple of pairs of zero drop shoes for business casual so i was kind of willing to pay whatever it costs. But the price, even with a 20% discount at OnlineShoes, was still quite steep, imo.

Also, i've gotten several complements from folks when i wear my Ra.

and in response to Jay, yes, they have loosened up with wear.

Hi Huib

I'm looking to buy a pair of vivobarefoot ra and I was wondering how the soles are holding up six months down the line?

To be honest...

Jim, to be honest, I don't know. I needed and still need the shoes for job interviews because their still one of the decents pairs I have. So I don't use them as much as I want to at the moment.

same here

I work out of my home and therefore don't need to wear business casual shoes very often. So i don't wear my pair very much. But i really, really like them. They are my go to shoe when i need something that looks nice.

One unexpected consequence is that my dress slacks drag a bit when I wear these shoes. My slacks were bought when my shoes had heels and i chose an inseam accordingly. I need to shorten my trousers to accommodate the lack of heel.

Likewise I've found my trousers are now a little long with my Vivo's

Want to try the Ra's, recently got the Legacy Leather in black, but still looks a little like a trainer, whereas the Ra would look more in place in the office.

The Legacy also have a more rigid heal cup.

Some interesting options in original article (good review!), but limited for me in the UK.

Heel digging into my Achilles

I too had the problem with the heel of the shoe digging into my Achilles, I found that just tying my shoes loosely (only tight enough to close the shoe around your foot) fixed the problem.

Love the Ra

Not sure anybody is still reading this post, but I was searching for Ra discounts online and came across this. I have several pair of Vivobarefoot business casual shoes and Neo workout shoes, too, and have had a terrific experience. I have owned two pairs of Vivo Dharmas (one black, one brown) for over two years, and the soles are still in fantastic shape. The leather is getting worn, and since it is pebbled leather, there isn't much to be done.

I also own the Ra in black leather, blue canvas and beige suede (and just bought a pair in red-brown leather). The leather is stiff at first, but softens up after a few wears. I am wearing the black Ra's as I type this, and have had them on since early this morning. I wore them to a business meeting, the airport, on the plane, home and didn't even think to take them off because are just THAT comfortable.

So, yeah, I'm a convert to minimalist shoes in general and Vivobarefoot in particular since finding these, and never - other than a wedding or funeral - wear stiff, raised-heel shoes anymore.

Care products for the Ra shows

I would like to know how you are caring of the vegetable tanned leather that is used on Ra shoes? I just got today my first pair of Ra and I'm thinking if this kind of leather needs different attention than "normal" leather.

Huib's picture

caring of the vegetable tanned leather

Hello Mark, I actually don't know the answer. I would use normal shoecream. I shall ask Vivobarefoot about this.
